Suspects Detained in Vehicle Arson Cases
A 25-year-old foreigner has been taken into custody by law enforcement in Kyiv, accused of setting fire to civilian cars while posing as a military member, acting on orders from Russian intelligence services. Alongside him, a 48-year-old local resident was arrested for torching a vehicle belonging to a Ukrainian soldier. Additionally, two individuals from the Kirovohrad region have been formally notified of suspicion for burning luxury SUVs in January 2025.
The detained foreigner, who entered Ukraine in early March, was working for Russian special services. He disguised his actions by affixing Ukrainian Armed Forces symbols to vehicle windows. The suspect would pour flammable liquid onto windshields, hoods, and other parts of the car before igniting them. His actions destroyed two vehicles—a SsangYong and a Chery—both parked near apartment buildings and owned by local women.
The Kyiv police press office stated: 'To do this, he stuck Ukrainian Armed Forces symbols on the vehicle windows. Then he turned on his phone camera and filmed the process: pouring flammable liquid onto the windshield, hood, and other parts of the car, and setting it on fire. In this way, the perpetrator destroyed two cars—a SsangYong and a Chery—which were parked near high-rise buildings and belonged to local residents.'
Furthermore, Kyiv authorities arrested a 48-year-old unemployed local man who set fire to an Opel car on Druzhkivska Street in the Sviatoshyn district. Items seized from him include a mobile phone, ignition devices, matches, and containers of flammable liquid. The suspect has been formally charged, and a pre-trial investigation is underway under Article 194, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
Suspicions Against Kirovohrad Residents
The Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office has also notified two residents of the Kirovohrad region of suspicion for setting fire to a Porsche Cayenne in the Pechersk district around 5 a.m. in January 2025. The car’s owner lives abroad. The flames spread to a Range Rover Evoque, completely destroying both vehicles.
These arrests highlight the efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat acts of vandalism and terrorism that threaten national security. The exposure of a foreigner working for Russian intelligence underscores the growing risks posed by foreign agents seeking to destabilize Ukraine. These developments may mark a significant step in investigating and preventing similar crimes in the future.
