Scheduled Overhaul for the Capital’s Funicular
Kyiv’s iconic funicular will shut down from July 13 to August 21 for its annual scheduled maintenance, according to the municipal operator Kyivpastrans. This temporary closure affects a key transport link connecting the historic upper city with the Podil district along the Dnipro River. The planned works include a series of essential tasks aimed at preserving the technical integrity of both the infrastructure and the rolling stock.
Scope of the Planned Work
During the maintenance period, the following activities are scheduled:
- repairs to the machine, compressor, and thyristor rooms;
- inspection and, if necessary, replacement of sleepers;
- examination and shortening of the traction cable;
- survey of the contact network;
- renewal of warning markings at stations;
- repair of carriage doors;
- flaw detection of welded joints;
- partial refurbishment of seat upholstery;
- adjustment of the pneumatic system.
Due to design constraints, the carriages will not be dismantled. As Kyivpastrans noted, all work will be carried out directly at the stations and in the inter-station zone. Once the overhaul is complete, the funicular will resume normal operations.
“Because of the complex cable system and the significant weight of the carriages, the rolling stock is not dismantled. All work is performed directly at the stations and in the inter-station area.” - Kyivpastrans
After all scheduled tasks are finished, the carriages will undergo static and dynamic tests under increased load to ensure they are safe and reliable for passengers.
This planned maintenance is a critical part of keeping the funicular safe and efficient. While the service suspension may affect passenger flow during this period, carrying out regular technical work helps prevent future breakdowns. Once completed, the overhaul will guarantee a proper level of comfort and safety for all users of the funicular.
As the city undertakes essential maintenance on the funicular, it's important to note that other key infrastructure in Kyiv is also undergoing changes. For instance, a partial closure of the Northern Bridge is set to take place for five days, potentially impacting traffic flow in the area. Staying informed about these developments will help residents and visitors navigate their travel plans effectively.
