The History of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv
On July 15, 1834, the institution now known as Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv first opened its doors, initially operating out of rented private homes in the Pechersk district. Also referred to historically as the Imperial University of St. Vladimir in Kyiv, this university is recognized as a nationally significant architectural, urban planning, and historical landmark in Kyiv, Ukraine.
The design of the university building was developed over 1833–1834 by architects F. Mikhovich, A. Melnikov, and O. Bryullov. The original plan called for construction on a vacant lot near the Golden Gate. In 1834, a competition was announced for the best design, which was won by V. Beretti, a professor of architecture at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. The final location for the university building was personally selected by Russian Emperor Nicholas I, and the surrounding area was laid out in a Neoclassical style that highlights its importance in Kyiv's architectural history.
