Kyivstar: over 30% of the network remains without electricity, affecting communication

Київстар: більше третини мережі залишилася без електрики, що ускладнює зв'язок.

Challenging period for the 'Kyivstar' network

The mobile operator 'Kyivstar' reported a challenging period for the network as of the morning of November 20, over 30% of infrastructure has been left without electricity. This negatively affected the quality of communication across the country, where network elements are distributed almost evenly without power.

Situation on November 20

As of 9 AM on November 20, more than 30% of the network experienced power outages. As a result, five regional technological centers are operating on backup generators. It was also noted that about 4% of sites lost functionality. Meanwhile, 'Kyivstar' has reserved 99% of the home internet network, allowing for up to 12 hours of autonomous operation.

Among subscribers, as of mid-November, only 15-20% have taken care of backup power for routers. During the complete blackout in the Poltava region, the client power reserve was only 2%. In this difficult time, company representatives noted:

“Today is a very hard day. One of the hardest since the summer of 2024.”

They also emphasize that 'when there is no light, the fixed network remains operational'. In the face of such challenges, it is important for every subscriber to take steps to ensure the country stays connected whenever possible. 'Kyivstar' has installed over 80,000 LiFePO4 batteries to help maintain network operation. However, given the situation, the operator urges its customers to be prepared for potential difficulties with communication.

The situation with electricity supply in Ukraine continues to negatively impact communication infrastructure, as confirmed by the experience of 'Kyivstar'. Considering the limitations, the operator is taking measures to support communication, but subscribers must also be ready for challenges. This underscores the importance of backup power to ensure uninterrupted communication in the event of power outages.
