Debunking the Myth of Using Salt in Sewers
Kyivvodokanal (Kyiv Water Authority) and the Kyiv City State Administration have moved to correct a widespread misconception that pouring salt into sewers can prevent pipes from freezing. They explain that this method is ineffective because sewer pipes in Kyiv are buried at a depth of over 1.2 meters, well below the frost line. Furthermore, the building drainage system operates on a gravity-flow principle, which is not designed for and does not benefit from the use of salt.
Proper Waste Disposal Guidelines
In light of this, Kyivvodokanal representatives stress the critical importance of following proper waste disposal rules. It is prohibited to flush certain substances and items into the sewer system, as they can cause serious blockages. The list of prohibited materials includes:
- Grease and cooking oil
- Cat litter
- Hygiene products and wipes
- Hair and pet fur
- Condoms
- Construction debris
Separately, it is important to note that following the attack on January 24, 2026, the Desnianskyi district of Kyiv became the epicenter of a major utility crisis. Due to infrastructure damage in the Troieshchyna area, approximately 600 apartment buildings were left without electricity, water supply, and heating. The disabling of the TEC-6 combined heat and power plant left the entire Troieshchyna residential district without heating. As a result of these events, Kyiv will soon return to scheduled power blackouts, which will significantly impact residents' daily lives. This context makes protecting the city's sewer infrastructure from blockages even more urgent.
