New Street Unveiled in North Korean Capital
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has inaugurated a new street in Pyongyang dedicated to military personnel who died during Russia's war against Ukraine. He personally oversaw the project's implementation, which he initiated in August 2024. The street is situated in the new Hwasong district of the capital, highlighting the initiative's national importance. This move underscores North Korea's deepening alignment with Russia on the global stage, a partnership that has grown since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
During the opening ceremony, Kim Jong Un inspected sections of a future monument and museum dedicated to the fallen soldiers. He emphasized that the project is
“a source of honor for our generation and the pride of Pyongyang and the state”and noted that the street's opening demonstrates
“the warm sincerity of our party and state toward the families”of the deceased servicemen.
Involvement in Demining Operations
Furthermore, in December 2024, North Korea confirmed the participation of its engineering troops in demining operations in Russia's Kursk region. A formal ceremony marking the return of the DPRK's 528th Engineering Regiment was held in Pyongyang on December 12, 2024, signaling the country's active role in these efforts. The street inauguration and the confirmed demining involvement highlight a foreign policy from Pyongyang aimed at bolstering support for Russia.
This North Korean initiative can be viewed as part of the country's strategic course to support Russia within the context of international conflicts. The street opening and demining participation indicate Pyongyang's attempts to strengthen its ties with Moscow and emphasize shared interests between the two states.
