Prospects for Upcoming Trilateral Peace Discussions
Kirilo Budanov, head of the Ukrainian President’s Office, announced the potential for a new round of trilateral peace talks scheduled for October 2026. On September 6, 2026, U.S. special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Kyiv to engage in three rounds of negotiations. Notably, on September 5, the envoys visited Moscow, marking a crucial step in preparing for these upcoming talks.
Commitment to Dialogue
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his willingness to reengage in trilateral negotiations involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia. He also confirmed there is an agreement to hold a subsequent meeting including Ukraine, the U.S., and European representatives. Zelensky mentioned the possibility of meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin at the G20 summit in Miami in December 2026, contingent on Putin’s attendance.
Budanov highlighted the tangible effects of sanctions on Russia, especially in the oil and gas sectors.
“The Russian Federation is already feeling significant pressure from these measures. Just look at what is happening in their oil and gas industry,” Budanov stated.He further pointed out challenges with Black Sea shipping routes: “While we face difficulties in transporting our goods through the Black Sea, the area remains effectively blocked for them as well, causing substantial problems on their side.”
Zelensky emphasized Ukraine’s readiness to respond to anticipated Russian attacks targeting its energy infrastructure this coming winter. The evolving situation surrounding trilateral negotiations and increased international engagement remains a key focus.
