Construction of the New Type 004 Aircraft Carrier
As of May 26 at 21:50, China is making significant progress on its next aircraft carrier, the Type 004. According to a report from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), the vessel boasts impressive specifications, including a length of 286 meters and a beam of 46 meters. A defining feature of the design is its nuclear power plant, evidenced by two large compartments within the hull. This development is linked to the efforts of China's 701st Research Institute, which is working on a reactor prototype.
Technical Specs and Defense Systems
The Type 004 carrier will be equipped with four electromagnetic catapults, enhancing aircraft launch efficiency. Beijing plans to safeguard its carrier strike groups through a three-tiered defense system:
- Outer Defense Zone: Covering distances from 185 to 400 kilometers, utilizing J-15 fighters and submarines.
- Middle Defense Ring: Spanning 45 to 185 kilometers, deploying Type 052D destroyers and Type 054A frigates.
- Inner Defense Layer: Operating from 100 meters to 45 kilometers.
To support carrier groups, China is expanding production of nuclear-powered submarines. The carrier’s protection will also involve ballistic missiles capable of striking targets at ranges of 1,450 to 1,550 kilometers. Among these are DF-26 missiles, which can reach objects up to 4,000 kilometers away. Additionally, a 271-meter-long supply vessel is under construction, designed to deliver fuel and ammunition.
Analysts, including Eric Wertheim, predict that the Type 004 will be launched in 2032.
This project underscores China’s ambition to bolster its naval power and long-range operational capabilities.
The development of the Type 004 carrier marks a critical step in China’s expanding naval strength, which could significantly shift regional power dynamics. This highlights Beijing’s strategic goals, particularly regarding maritime routes and territorial waters, potentially fueling tensions with neighboring states. At the same time, China’s growing military capabilities are raising concerns among other nations, notably the United States and its allies, which may lead to new forms of security cooperation or confrontation.
