China Denies Plans for a Tripartite Summit with the US and Russia on Ukraine Conflict

Китай заперечує можливість проведення тристоронньої зустрічі зі США та Росією щодо конфлікту в Україні.

Prospective Meeting of China, US, and Russian Leaders

China's Foreign Ministry has no confirmation regarding a potential summit involving President Xi Jinping, former US President Donald Trump, and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which was rumored to take place next month to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. At a recent briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stated:

“Currently, I have no information to share on this matter.”

According to The Wall Street Journal, Vladimir Putin proposed a meeting between the leaders of China, the US, and Russia next month aimed at exploring ways to halt the Ukraine conflict. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged that discussions about such a meeting have occurred but did not confirm whether the summit has been formally agreed upon.

Ukraine Voices Concerns Over Negotiation Format

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha expressed apprehension about the proposed trilateral talks involving the US, China, and Russia. He warned that this format might embolden Vladimir Putin to continue the war against Ukraine. Sybiha also highlighted that inviting Putin to engage directly with the US and Chinese presidents could boost his international stature undeservedly.

The situation surrounding these possible negotiations remains complex and unpredictable. While a tripartite summit could represent a significant step toward resolving the Ukraine crisis, Ukraine stresses the importance of a negotiation framework that genuinely supports its interests and timelines. Any diplomatic efforts must avoid empowering Russia and instead contribute to a meaningful resolution. The next developments will depend heavily on international dynamics and the positions of key stakeholders involved in the peace process.

Given the ongoing global tensions, the international community closely watches these developments as they could influence the broader geopolitical landscape and the future of peace in Eastern Europe.

The complexities of international diplomacy surrounding the Ukraine conflict are further underscored by the recent proposal from the Trump administration for a trilateral summit involving the US, Ukraine, and Russia. This initiative aims to establish a ceasefire in energy sectors and revive grain corridor discussions, reflecting the intricate interplay of political strategies aimed at resolving the ongoing crisis.
