A Space Atlas for a New Era
On August 17 at 16:30, Chinese researchers unveiled an exceptionally detailed map of the Moon at a scale of 1:5,000,000. The atlas redraws the boundaries between the Aitken, Nectarian, and Imbrian stages of lunar formation. After reprocessing spectral data, scientists determined that KREEP rocks—enriched with potassium, rare-earth elements, and phosphorus—occupy a significantly larger area than previously believed.
The findings draw on samples returned by the robotic Chang'e-5 and Chang'e-6 missions. The latter achieved a historic first by bringing back material from the Moon's far side to Earth. Beijing has also approved its own cartographic standard, which is planned to guide future mapmaking for Mars and other bodies in the Solar System.
Geological Discoveries
On this updated map, light tones represent younger formations, while darker shades correspond to ancient rock. Geologist Yang Zhiming noted:
