The sensors under evaluation can detect weak partial electrical discharges, as well as changes in temperature and humidity inside rooms with switchgear. Researchers have also developed systems that spot cracks in ferromagnetic materials such as iron and cobalt, and can flag potential fire threats.
A diamond-based sensor is especially notable because it can register extremely minute fluctuations in electric current. According to the report's estimates, this technology could reduce metering errors at the substation by more than 500,000 kilowatt-hours each year. Quantum encryption has also been integrated into the fiber-optic lines and 5G networks that support the power system.
At the same substation, China is using Origin Wukong, a third-generation quantum computer, to simulate different grid operating scenarios. That reflects a serious national commitment to bringing advanced innovations into electricity supply. If the trials succeed, this could become an important step toward safer and more dependable power networks.
