Beijing Concludes Naval Operation Near Taiwan Amid Rising Tensions with Japan and the Philippines

Китай завершив військові навчання на морі поблизу Тайваню, підвищуючи напругу у відносинах з Японією та Філіппінами.

Naval Law Enforcement Mission Wraps Up

China's Ministry of Transport has confirmed the successful conclusion of a four-day maritime law enforcement operation in waters east of Taiwan, running from Saturday to Wednesday. The mission was launched in direct response to Japan and the Philippines announcing bilateral talks on delimiting their exclusive economic zones and continental shelf in the same area. Beijing views Taiwan as a province of China, underscoring the high stakes of this operation for regional security.

Operational Details

During the operation, China deployed a naval task force to conduct inspections of foreign vessels and patrol the waters. The following ships were involved:

  • the flagship maritime patrol vessel Haixun 09, with a displacement of 10,000 tons,
  • the large patrol and rescue vessel Haixun 06,
  • the hydrographic survey vessel Haixun 08,
  • the specialized rescue vessel Donghai Jiu 113.

Crews aboard Chinese ships forcibly checked the identification codes and navigation equipment of foreign civilian vessels, particularly in high-risk collision zones and areas where strategic undersea cables are located.

According to China Daily, this operation has strengthened China's capacity for maritime patrol and traffic control in the waters east of Taiwan, while also enhancing overall navigation safety in the region. China's Ministry of Transport views the actions by other countries as a serious violation of its territorial sovereignty and maritime interests.

Donald Trump has confirmed his intention to personally discuss arms sales to Taiwan with Chinese leader Xi, a move that could further shape the regional dynamic.

The conclusion of this mission highlights the growing friction in Southeast Asia, where competition for influence among China, Japan, and the United States continues to intensify. Beijing's assertive moves to control waterways and inspect foreign ships may be perceived by neighboring countries as aggressive, potentially fueling further escalation in the region. At the same time, the Japan-Philippines talks signal a push for stronger regional cooperation to secure vital sea lanes—a factor that could prove crucial in resolving future disputes.

The recent naval operation underscores the escalating tensions in the region, particularly as China initiates patrols near Taiwan in response to Japan and the Philippines' moves to solidify their maritime claims. This development reflects the broader geopolitical landscape, where military posturing and diplomatic negotiations are increasingly intertwined, raising concerns about stability in Southeast Asia.
