Record Energy Density in a Cold-Resistant Cell: China's New Lithium-Metal Battery Passes Tests

Researchers at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, have built a single-use lithium-metal battery that can keep working at temperatures as low as -40°C. Instead of a rigid metal casing, the cell uses a flat, soft-shell format. Its capacity is 25 amp-hours, and it delivers remarkably strong energy output. For context, extreme cold usually degrades battery performance, so a cell that operates reliably under such conditions is unusual.

Technical Specifications

According to Science and Technology Daily, slow discharge produces more than 750 watt-hours per kilogram. The Safety Laboratory of the China Electronics Standardization Institute verified that the battery withstands a sustained 4C discharge and short spikes up to 10C. At room temperature, output can reach 4,487 watts per kilogram; at -40°C, it holds 447 Wh/kg during a one-hour discharge.

Importantly, this battery is not rechargeable. It can remain in storage for years while losing less than 1% of its charge per year. The performance boost comes from a new cathode material based on a high-entropy oxide. Researchers have already launched a pilot line capable of producing 10 tonnes of this cathode material annually.

Additional trials are now testing the battery for use in drones, robots, space-flight simulators, and field sensor nodes. Independent testing confirms the device's potential for broad use in extreme conditions.
