Chinese researchers working at the LHAASO high-altitude observatory have announced the discovery of the most powerful source of gamma radiation in our galaxy. The announcement was made on August 19 at 10:00. The object is designated as the binary system Cygnus X-3 and is capable of accelerating matter to 30 peta-electronvolts. This discovery serves as a reminder that the most powerful natural particle accelerators are not located on Earth but in outer space.
What is Known About Cygnus X-3
The Cygnus X-3 system is located in the Cygnus constellation and includes a compact object and a companion star. The gamma radiation from this system varies in a wave-like pattern with a period of 4.8 hours, which corresponds to the rotation period of the components around their common center of mass. Notably, signals of ultra-high energy are detected only during flares in the normal range, while they disappear in quiescent phases.
The localized acceleration region is three times the size of the Sun. Particle acceleration occurs as follows: protons are ejected from the base of a relativistic jet and collide with ultraviolet photons, producing gamma quanta and neutrinos. Chinese scientists recorded gamma rays with unprecedented energy, expanding the possibilities for astrophysical research.
