Remembering Halyna Stadniychuk

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko recently shared the story of an embroidered shirt crafted by Halyna Stadniychuk, a local Kyiv resident who passed away at the age of 82. This garment was her last unfinished piece.

“This shirt was given to me on Vyshyvanka Day. Wearing something like this fills me with immense pride,” Klitschko remarked.

The shirt, decorated with beads, features a map of Ukraine on its left side. It was presented to the mayor on the significant occasion of Vyshyvanka Day. Halyna Stadniychuk left a lasting mark on the nation’s cultural landscape, and her work will be remembered. Klitschko also expressed his lasting gratitude for their conversations, noting that they shared pivotal moments in Ukraine’s history together.

Symbols of Support for Ukrainian Culture

On May 27, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appeared on camera wearing a black embroidered shirt adorned with white and red Ukrainian coats of arms. This gesture of backing for Ukrainian culture and national identity has become a powerful symbol amid today’s challenges. The segment also featured an interview with Nadiya Vakulenko, director of the All-Ukrainian Center for Embroidery and Carpet Weaving, who highlighted the vyshyvanka’s role as a cornerstone of Ukrainian tradition.

In her final message, Halyna Stadniychuk wrote:

“I give you the flag of freedom! I was your supporter and I remain so. I never missed a single fight of yours or your brother’s. With Ukraine in my heart. Because Ukraine is in your heart.”
These words serve as a reminder of the importance of solidarity and support during the country’s difficult times.

This event underscores not only the significance of cultural heritage but also the intergenerational bonds within Ukraine. The vyshyvanka, as a symbol of identity, continues to take center stage in society, especially during challenging periods. The memory of Halyna Stadniychuk and her artistry stands as a reminder of the need to preserve traditions and support one another in tough times.
