The Push for an Ivan Mazepa Monument
Kyiv's municipal government has not received any formal requests to erect a monument to Hetman Ivan Mazepa on Taras Shevchenko Boulevard, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko. He stated that he first learned of the proposal through media reports. Specifically, on June 28, during Constitution Day celebrations, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested that a full-fledged monument to Mazepa should be placed where a statue of Vladimir Lenin once stood until December 2013.
Klitschko also emphasized that he has no details about who would design or produce the sculpture.
“Similarly, I have no information on who the author will be or who will manufacture the statue. As soon as we receive a formal request and all necessary details, the city government will follow the legally prescribed procedure,”the mayor explained. He added that alternative plans are under consideration for the site opposite the Bessarabsky Market, including the possibility of installing a fountain where the Lenin monument previously stood.

As a result, the question of erecting an Ivan Mazepa monument remains unresolved and hinges on official submissions and further deliberation. Klitschko noted that the most neutral course of action is to strictly adhere to the legal framework throughout the process.
