Kyiv Mayor Klychko Seeks Staff Changes from Zelenskyy After Icy Streets Cause Injuries

Мер Києва Кличко вимагає від Зеленського змін у команді через травми, спричинені слизькими дорогами.

Kyiv Mayor's Appeal to the Ukrainian President

On January 19, 2026, Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klychko appealed to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, requesting personnel measures be taken against the heads of the capital's districts. This appeal followed a severe ice situation on the city's streets, particularly on Yaroslaviv Val and Bulvarno-Kudriavska streets, which resulted in injuries to people attempting to navigate these areas.

The icy conditions caused injuries near the 'Heroiv Dnipra' and 'Obolon' metro stations. Since the start of operations by mobile units of the State Emergency Service (SES), over 9,000 city residents have utilized their services, highlighting the scale of the problem and the urgent need for municipal action.

Commentary from a KMDA Representative

Marina Synhaivska, a representative of the Kyiv City State Administration (KMDA), noted that while sidewalk clearance is the responsibility of property managers, the city authorities must oversee this process. She expressed dissatisfaction with the situation, comparing it to a scene from a children's fairy tale:

'It looks as if Hansel and Gretel scattered their last breadcrumbs in the forest.' - Marina Synhaivska

Her remarks underscore the seriousness of the situation and the need for effective measures to ensure the safety of Kyiv's residents during winter.

Kyiv is also grappling with a difficult situation in its energy and utility sectors due to the aftermath of a mass attack on January 9. These circumstances complicate street-clearing efforts and demand coordinated action from city authorities to improve living conditions for residents.

Mayor Klychko's appeal to President Zelenskyy reflects an urgent need to improve management practices at the local level, especially amid winter hazards. The high number of ice-related injuries points to the critical importance of effective pedestrian safety oversight in the capital. Consequently, the city administration's subsequent actions could prove decisive for ensuring resident safety and enhancing their living environment.
