Military Buildup Along the Border

North Korea has announced plans to significantly increase its military presence along the southern border, raising alarm in neighboring South Korea. By the end of 2026, Pyongyang intends to deploy new self-propelled howitzers with a range exceeding 60 kilometers. This development directly threatens the Seoul metropolitan area, home to approximately 25 million people, and marks a notable escalation in the region's security landscape.

Kim Jong Un’s Inspection Tour

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally inspected military factories and oversaw tests of a new warship. During the visit, he toured a key defense facility where he received a report on the readiness of the first three battalions equipped with new 155-mm self-propelled gun-howitzers. Kim stated that

“deploying these systems will ensure superiority in ground operations.”

In addition, Kim focused on sea trials of the new 5,000-ton Choi Hyon-class destroyer. Notably, during its launch in May 2025, the destroyer suffered an accident that left its hull with breaches. After repairs and successful cruise missile tests in April and May 2026, the vessel is now being prepared for transfer to the navy. Kim’s daughter, Kim Ju Ae, accompanied him during the destroyer inspection.

Furthermore, North Korea has amended its constitution, removing all references to potential reunification with South Korea. Kim has also gained new powers, including control over the country’s nuclear forces. These moves signal a further hardening of North Korea’s military posture and a consolidation of the leader’s authority on the international stage.

The surge in North Korean military activity is heightening regional tensions, especially given the large population of South Korea that could come under threat. The constitutional changes and Kim’s expanded powers underscore Pyongyang’s drive to bolster its independence and military strength, potentially reshaping relations with neighboring countries and impacting global security.

The escalating military developments in North Korea are not isolated events. As the country enhances its artillery capabilities, it also approaches a critical milestone in its nuclear arsenal, now comparable to that of France. This growing threat underscores the need for vigilance and strategic responses from South Korea and its allies.
