Military Buildup Along the Border
North Korea has announced plans to significantly increase its military presence along the southern border, raising alarm in neighboring South Korea. By the end of 2026, Pyongyang intends to deploy new self-propelled howitzers with a range exceeding 60 kilometers. Kim Jong Un’s Inspection Tour
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally inspected military factories and oversaw tests of a new warship. “deploying these systems will ensure superiority in ground operations.”
In addition, Kim focused on sea trials of the new 5,000-ton Choi Hyon-class destroyer. Notably, during its launch in May 2025, the destroyer suffered an accident that left its hull with breaches. After repairs and successful cruise missile tests in April and May 2026, the vessel is now being prepared for transfer to the navy. Kim’s daughter, Kim Ju Ae, accompanied him during the destroyer inspection.
Furthermore, North Korea has amended its constitution, removing all references to potential reunification with South Korea. Kim has also gained new powers, including control over the country’s nuclear forces.
