Alexei Popov's Remarks on Racism in Sports

Former Rubin Kazan defender Alexei Popov has addressed a racist incident that occurred during the Russian Cup semi-final between CSKA Moscow and Krasnodar. Following the match, Krasnodar midfielder Eduard Spertsyan alleged that CSKA fans directed racist chants at his teammate, Jhon Córdoba. In response to these accusations, Popov expressed his dissatisfaction, asserting that racism does not exist in Russia.

'Everything is related to Córdoba's own behavior. Everyone is fixated on this racism. There is no racism whatsoever in Russia! If we had racism, all African Americans would be slaves and sweeping the streets. They achieve great success in our country; no one offends them. They walk the streets peacefully, just like people of other races. I don't understand why this is being stirred up. The main racists in this situation worldwide are the African Americans themselves. They complain the most about being offended. Yet they themselves tell everyone to go away. Is that normal? That means it's racism against white people too. If a dark-skinned person calls someone a white animal, we somehow don't complain to anyone. This only happens from the side of African Americans.' Alexei Popov

Skater Alexandra Savutina's Presence at Political Event

Separately, attention was drawn to the participation of neutral Russian speed skater Alexandra Savutina at Vladimir Putin's annual address to the Federal Assembly on February 29, 2024. Savutina is recognized as a neutral athlete by the International Skating Union (ISU). Russian skier Veronika Stepanova posted an Instagram photo showing Savutina at the event, which was also attended by Putin's allies and Russian military personnel involved in the war against Ukraine. Such appearances by athletes at state functions are often scrutinized for political symbolism.

Popov's comments highlight the persistent issue of racism in sports, which continues to spark intense debate. Concurrently, the involvement of athletes in official political events raises questions about the intersection of sports and state politics in Russia. These incidents can impact the perception of Russian sports internationally, particularly in a context of existing sanctions and political isolation.
