Former Ukrainian Lawmaker Admits Guilt in Corruption Case

A former member of Ukraine's parliament has entered a plea deal with the country's High Anti-Corruption Court. The ex-MP, who served in the 8th convocation, confessed to illegally obtaining housing compensation. The scheme involved claiming reimbursements for both hotel stays and rented accommodation, causing a loss to the state exceeding 750,000 hryvnias.

Court Ruling and Consequences

The court found the individual guilty of a crime under Part 2 of Article 364 of Ukraine's Criminal Code. The sentence included three years of imprisonment, a ban on holding certain public offices, and a fine of 17,000 hryvnias. However, the court released the defendant from serving the prison term based on Part 2 of Article 75, instead imposing a probationary period with obligations under Article 76.

As a key condition, the convicted former deputy is obligated to transfer 15 million hryvnias to the 'Come Back Alive' charitable foundation. This substantial sum is earmarked specifically for the purchase of attack drones for Ukraine's Defense Forces. The individual has also fully compensated the state for the financial damages incurred, indicating an effort to rectify the consequences of the crime.

This case highlights the ongoing anti-corruption efforts within Ukraine's government, particularly targeting public officials. The plea deal and the significant financial commitment to support the military, which is defending the country against a full-scale invasion, can be seen as an attempt to restore public trust. Such outcomes demonstrate that legal accountability remains a priority, even as the nation focuses on its wartime needs.
