Former Ukrainian Police Officer Sentenced to 7 Years for Fatal Abuse of Power

Колишнього правоохоронця з України засудили до семи років за зловживання службовими обов'язками, що призвели до смерті.

Verdict from the Tyachiv District Court

The Tyachiv District Court in the Zakarpattia region has convicted a former police officer for abuse of authority resulting in a fatality. The court sentenced him to seven years in prison and barred him from holding any law enforcement position for an additional three years.

Circumstances of the Incident

The fatal event occurred at approximately 10:50 PM on September 5, 2021, at a gas station in the village of Neresnytsia. The victim sustained a traumatic brain injury, underwent two surgeries, but died 13 days later from cerebral edema.

Following the incident, the officer, who had served for about a year, was dismissed from duty. The court's ruling followed an investigation that established the facts of the officer's overreach. During the trial, an emotional statement was presented:

"He felt sorry for people - the policeman"
, highlighting a personal dimension of the case.

This case underscores the critical accountability of law enforcement for their actions and demonstrates that abuses of power can lead to severe consequences. It comes amid ongoing public discussions in Ukraine about police reform, aimed at increasing public trust and ensuring human rights protections.

The ruling is likely to influence future cases involving police violence, as society and human rights organizations continue to demand greater transparency and accountability in such matters. This verdict is part of a broader effort to address systemic issues within the country's law enforcement agencies.
