Former ambassador proposes a new strategy for Ukraine: a security alliance from Scandinavia to Turkey

Експерт з міжнародних відносин розробив план для забезпечення стабільності в Україні через співпрацю різних держав.

New Security Strategy for Ukraine

Serhiy Korsunsky, the former ambassador of Ukraine to Japan and Turkey, proposes a new security strategy for Ukraine that involves forming an alliance from Scandinavia to Turkey. According to the diplomat, Ukraine should abandon the image of a frontier country that is constantly between the 'wild horde' and the 'civilized West'. Korsunsky believes that such a position is existentially dangerous.

In his interview with Yuriy Romanenko, Korsunsky noted that Ukraine has always been part of the historical path 'from Varangians to Greeks' and must realize that its surroundings consist of countries that understand what Russia is. The diplomat emphasized that the security alliance should include:

  • Scandinavian countries
  • Baltic countries
  • Poland
  • Germany
  • Romania
  • Bulgaria
  • Ukraine
  • Turkey

Korsunsky also stressed that Ukraine should become not a consumer of security but a contributor to security. He believes that powerful countries to the south, such as Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey, can provide Ukraine with real security guarantees. This will allow Ukraine to take an active position in shaping the security space in the region.

Changing the Strategic Approach

Serhiy Korsunsky's proposal to change Ukraine's strategic approach to security reflects a broader aspiration for the country to become an equal participant in international relations. Forming a security alliance among Scandinavian, Baltic, and Southern European countries could be a key step in strengthening regional stability and countering aggression from Russia. Changing the paradigm from a 'consumer' of security to a 'contributor' may indicate Ukraine's maturity in international policy and security issues.
