The Billion-Dollar Heist
A court in Chișinău has sentenced Vladimir Plahotniuc to 19 years in prison for his role in a scheme that stole one billion dollars from the Moldovan banking system. The verdict was delivered on April 22, 2026. Plahotniuc was found guilty of complicity in the embezzlement of funds from three major Moldovan banks:
- Banca de Economii
- Banca Sociala
- Unibank
According to the prosecution, he received $39 million and €3.5 million through companies controlled by Ilan Shor, who was also convicted in absentia in the same case and sentenced to 15 years. Prosecutors had initially sought a 25-year prison term for Plahotniuc.
Arrest and Extradition from Greece
Plahotniuc was detained in Greece at the end of July 2025 at Athens Airport. He was extradited to Moldova on September 25, 2025, and placed in Chișinău's Prison No. 13. Former MP Constantin Țuțu was also detained alongside him. A search of his villa in Saronida uncovered significant evidence, including:

- Mobile phones
- Computers
- Luxury watches
Who is Vladimir Plahotniuc?
Vladimir Plahotniuc served as a Moldovan MP from 2010 to 2015 and became chairman of the Democratic Party in 2016. By 2019, he was under investigation for money laundering, and in 2020, he was formally charged in absentia for the billion-dollar bank fraud, which first came to light in late November 2014. His lawyer, Lucian Rogac, claimed that
"the trial was marred by numerous procedural violations."Plahotniuc himself maintains that
