Colombian Volunteers in Ukraine's Forces: A Sergeant's Account of Their Combat Role

Колумбійські волонтери в українських військах: спогади сержанта про їхню участь у бойових діях.

Foreign Volunteers Serving in Ukraine's Armed Forces

Ukraine's military includes service members from numerous nations, among them foreign volunteers. Junior Sergeant Serhiy, call sign 'Kutik', of the 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade, discussed the role of these international fighters, specifically Colombians, during an interview with political analyst Yuriy Romanenko.

Sergeant Kutik emphasized that foreign volunteers carry out a significant portion of the frontline duties. The presence of volunteers from countries like Colombia, which has its own history of protracted conflict, brings unique military experience to the battlefield.

“They performed a colossal amount of work. There’s no room for argument here. They truly carried out a massive volume of tasks.”

He highlighted that Colombian personnel were frequently deployed in assault operations, undertaking critical missions under difficult conditions.

“They broke through lines and held defensive positions. From what I know, they were used primarily for assaults. Precisely when they stormed positions, and our units moved in to consolidate—they did an incredible amount of work.”

Kutik also noted that the motivation level of the foreign volunteers was exceptionally high.

“And let me tell you, if there were more people like them. They were motivated, you know, like our troops were in 2022. Their morale and psychological state was more or less the same. I’d put it this way: trained, motivated, they were driven only to push forward, that’s it.”

These remarks point to a high degree of cooperation and interoperability between Ukrainian soldiers and foreign volunteers, who continue to fight for a shared objective.

Global Engagement in Support of Ukraine

The involvement of foreign volunteers in the Ukraine conflict underscores the worldwide interest in supporting the Ukrainian state against military aggression. As noted by the junior sergeant, Colombians demonstrate high motivation and preparedness, making them valuable allies in combat.

This also illustrates the capacity of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to integrate international resources, a factor that can significantly influence the dynamics of hostilities in the region. The international legion has become a notable feature of Ukraine's defense since the full-scale invasion began.
