In 2026, certain members of the families of fallen service members may receive a pension amounting to 50% of the breadwinner's salary. This is not a regular pension of half the salary of the recipient, but a payment due to the loss of the breadwinner. This is reported by Novyny.LIVE referring to the Pension Fund of Ukraine.
The amount of the payment depends on the cause of the military's death and the number of dependent family members entitled to the pension.
Who receives 50% of the military's salary in 2026
If the service member died or passed away while performing their duties, the pension is awarded in the following amounts:
- 70% of the salary to one dependent family member;
- 50% each to two or more dependent family members, excluding parents and the spouse;
- 30% to each recipient if the death is not related to military duties.
In particular, 50% may be awarded to two or more children of the deceased military member. Children are entitled to this payment regardless of whether they were dependent on the breadwinner.
Rights may also be held by children under 18 years, full-time students up to 23 years, children with disabilities established before adulthood, and under certain legal conditions by parents, spouses, and other dependent relatives.
The pension for each dependent family member in 2026 cannot be less than two subsistence minimums for the unfit to work, which is 5190 UAH.
How to apply for a pension for a military family in Ukraine in 2026
If the service member did not receive a pension prior to their death, the application is submitted through the authorized unit of the military authority where they served. If the service member was a military pensioner, relatives can contact the Pension Fund service center directly or submit documents through the Fund's web portal.
Usually, a passport and taxpayer identification number of the applicant, a death certificate, proof of family ties, documents on dependency or education, and bank account details are required. The final list depends on the recipient's category.
For families of military personnel missing under special circumstances, a different procedure applies. Until the death is officially established, the payment is calculated not as a portion of the military's salary, but according to the rules of mandatory pension insurance. Rights arise a month after the information is entered into the Unified Register of Persons Missing.
It should be noted that certain categories of pensioners may receive additional payments ranging from 597 to 1038 UAH beyond the main pension in August.
