Changes in Alcoholic Beverage Labeling in Ukraine
Starting January 1, 2026, the alcoholic beverage known as 'cognac' will no longer be available for sale in Ukraine. This is due to Ukrainian producers transitioning to labeling their products as 'brandy' in accordance with international standards. The end of the transitional period for the use of the geographical indication 'Cognac' will occur on this day.
According to the new regulations, from 2025 Ukrainian producers are also prohibited from labeling alcoholic beverages with names that have geographical indications, such as:
- Bordeaux
- Chablis
- Champagne
- Calvados
- Chianti
- Port
- Madeira
- Sherry
- Spanish sparkling wine coffee
These changes are part of efforts to align Ukrainian legislation with international standards.
It is worth noting that fines for violating geographical indication rules are set between 5 and 15 minimum wage amounts. As of January 1, 2026, this fine will range from 43,235 UAH to 129,705 UAH. Such measures aim to protect consumer rights and ensure compliance of products with international norms.
Quality Control and Labeling of Products
Furthermore, since 2023, Ukrainian producers have already been prohibited from using names like 'Parmesan cheese', 'Roquefort', and 'Feta', indicating a strengthening of quality control and labeling of products in Ukraine. Thus, the Ukrainian alcoholic beverage market is undergoing significant changes that will affect consumer habits and the variety of products available.
The changes in labeling alcoholic beverages in Ukraine reflect global trends towards standardization and consumer rights protection. The introduction of new regulations aims to enhance product quality and prevent consumer deception. These measures may also lead to changes in market conditions, as producers will have to adapt their strategies to comply with new requirements.
