Міністр оборони вступає в нову фазу роботи після подій мобілізації в Житомирській області.

Shooting Incident in Novohuivynske

On January 31, 2026, a confrontation occurred in the town of Novohuivynske, Zhytomyr region, between a serviceman from a territorial recruitment center and local residents. During the altercation, which took place as part of ongoing mobilization efforts in the community, the serviceman discharged a starting pistol. Police responded swiftly to the scene and managed to de-escalate the situation.

According to police reports, no civilians sustained physical injuries. All individuals involved have been identified, and an investigation is currently underway to determine the appropriate legal classification for the incident. Officers on site confirmed that the situation was brought under control and posed no further threat to the public.

Defense Ministry's Response

Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has taken personal oversight of the case, stating he is working on it in coordination with the recruitment center. He provided context by noting that approximately 2 million Ukrainian citizens are currently sought by recruitment centers for mobilization, while around 200,000 individuals have left military units without authorization. These figures highlight the ongoing challenges and societal tensions surrounding conscription efforts during the war.

All circumstances of the conflict remain under the control of the relevant authorities, and a final legal assessment of the event is expected shortly.

The Novohuivynske incident reflects the broader, highly sensitive context of Ukraine's mobilization drive, which continues due to the ongoing war. The involvement of military personnel in these duties, coupled with recurring issues of maintaining public order during conscription, points to significant societal strain. The prompt response from both police and the Defense Ministry underscores the government's focus on maintaining strict oversight to prevent similar conflicts from arising in the future.
