Research conducted in two isolated indigenous communities of Bolivia's Amazon— the Tsimane and Moseten peoples—has revealed some of the lowest dementia rates recorded globally. A five-year study led by anthropologist Benjamin Trumble and gerontologist Margaret Gatz found that dementia prevalence in these populations is three to four times lower than that observed in the United States and Europe. However, once diagnosed, individuals tend to have a shorter survival time due to the demanding conditions of subsistence living.

Advanced age and the presence of the ε4 variant of the apolipoprotein E gene are well-known biological risk factors for dementia. Notably, most dementia cases among the Tsimane and Moseten do not stem from Alzheimer's disease. Instead, symptoms often point to vascular impairments and Parkinson’s-like features.
