Corruption scheme in defense: 102 million hryvnias stolen for tank protection

Схема корупції в оборонній сфері: 102 мільйони гривень розкрадено на захист танків.

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU), together with the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP) and the Security Service of Ukraine, uncovered a corruption scheme in the defense sector related to the embezzlement of over 102 million hryvnias allocated for the protection of tanks of the Armed Forces. In particular, suspicions have arisen against three individuals who, having conspired, began criminal activities in a rationalized group.

In April 2022, when the country was outraged by the Russian offensive, a contract was signed between the Ministry of Defense and a state-owned enterprise for the purchase of dynamic protection for armored vehicles. However, the director of the enterprise chose an illegal path, inviting the commercial director and the head of a private company to the deal to buy elements at inflated prices.

"To avoid attracting attention, a representative of the private company organized the conclusion of agreements through fictitious firms, and the money received from military orders was legalized through other accounts" - the investigation materials state.

Of course, this is just one of many cases of corruption in Ukraine that are revealed thanks to the diligent work of law enforcement. Ultimately, it is important not only to hold those responsible to justice but also to prevent similar manipulations in the future by ensuring transparency and control in the defense sector.
