Makau Supercomputer Debuts in Hawaii
On August 14 at 9:30 a.m., the US Space Force announced that its new flagship supercomputer, Makau, is now operational. Built on a Hewlett Packard Enterprise Cray XD2000 platform and deployed at the MHPCC facility in Hawaii, the system delivers roughly 2.64 quadrillion floating-point operations per second, backed by 74 enterprise-class GPUs and 19.2 terabytes of available memory. The deployment underscores the service's growing reliance on advanced computing to support space operations.
Makau will serve as a key resource for:
- space situational awareness,
- cyber operations,
- digital engineering,
- modeling,
- simulation, and analysis.
Artificial-intelligence algorithms will play a distinct role in operations, enabling fast, efficient data analysis. As MHPCC Technical Director John Marlia put it:

MHPCC currently employs more than 45 specialists from the local community and has posted additional job openings, signaling further team growth. Liquid cooling loops are used to dissipate excess heat, helping the supercomputer run efficiently.
MHPCC Director Scott Pierce highlighted the importance of AI integration, noting that "machine-learning models can automate the merging of multiple data sources to create a timelier and more complete operational picture." With Makau online, new opportunities for research and development in space technology are now open.
