Kremlin Statements on a Possible Meeting

Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Moscow at any time. According to Peskov, holding the meeting outside Russia would only make sense for signing final agreements. He also emphasized that Russia remains open to dialogue and welcomes the United States' role as a mediator in negotiations.

Status of the Humanitarian Ceasefire

Against the backdrop of ongoing military operations, Peskov declared the end of a three-day humanitarian ceasefire that had been in place from May 8 to May 10. He confirmed that the 'special military operation is resuming in full force.' However, it is worth noting that the ceasefire was violated on its very first night, when Russia attacked the Sumy region with drones and a ballistic missile. Peskov also stressed that reaching a peace agreement would take considerable time, adding that 'the special military operation will stop at any moment as soon as Kyiv makes the necessary decisions, which they are well aware of.'

For his part, Volodymyr Zelensky insists he is only willing to engage in direct talks outside of Russia and Belarus. In April, the Ukrainian president stated that a meeting with Putin could take place in the Middle East, Europe, or the United States. Serhiy Leshchenko, an informal advisor to the Office of the President of Ukraine, noted that the Kremlin acknowledges the challenging phase of negotiations with Ukraine.

As a result, the two sides hold divergent views on the format and location of any potential talks, complicating the path toward a peace agreement.

The situation surrounding possible negotiations between Ukraine and Russia reveals a lack of consensus on the meeting's format and venue, which hinders progress toward a peace deal. While Russia proposes holding the meeting in Moscow, Ukraine insists on alternative locations, highlighting differing strategic approaches. This also underscores the complexity of international relations and the crucial role mediators play in this process.

The ongoing discussions about a potential meeting between Putin and Zelensky highlight the complexities of the situation. As both leaders express differing preferences for the venue, the involvement of third parties may play a crucial role in facilitating these negotiations. Recently, Turkey has stepped forward, proposing to mediate the talks, while Russia has set specific conditions.
