Spring Thaw in Kyiv Turns Ice Deadly as Rescue Services Report Multiple Incidents

Весняне відтавання в Києві приносить небезпеку: рятувальники фіксують численні випадки лиха.

Dangerous Ice Conditions Reported in Kyiv

As spring approaches, Kyiv's waterways have become perilously unsafe, with several people having already fallen through the ice. Daytime temperatures are reaching highs of +15°C, while nights hover around +5°C, causing the ice to melt rapidly and become unstable. This seasonal thaw is a well-known hazard in regions with cold winters, yet incidents occur annually.

On March 9th at 7:37 PM, two children were stranded on an ice floe that had broken off and drifted 20 meters from shore in Kyiv. Rescuers needed a rubber boat and diving equipment to bring them to safety. During the spring warm-up, ice becomes porous and brittle, losing its structural integrity even if it appears deceptively thick.

A Series of Accidents on Local Waters

Earlier, on March 5th, a 51-year-old fisherman fell through the ice on the Dnipro River in Kyiv. A witness named Serhii also broke through the ice while attempting to assist him. Serhii noted the dangerous conditions, stating:

“The ice was very fragile and thin.” - Serhii

Furthermore, on March 1st, two individuals fell through the ice on a canal in Kyiv but managed to climb out on their own.

Venturing onto rivers and lakes during this period poses a direct threat to life. In an emergency, rescue services urge people to call 101 immediately. Safety on frozen bodies of water must be a priority for everyone, especially under spring conditions that render the ice treacherous. This situation underscores the critical need for public awareness about the risks associated with thinning ice. Emergency services continue to warn the public to exercise extreme caution and avoid walking on ice altogether, as it can lead to dangerous and potentially fatal incidents.
