Kriviy Rih endures a massive attack: 8 injured and thousands without electricity

Кривий Ріг піддався потужному обстрілу: 8 постраждалих та тисячі людей без світла.

Attack on Kriviy Rih

On January 7, 2023, Kriviy Rih experienced one of the largest combined attacks during the full-scale invasion, resulting in injuries and a complex electricity situation. The head of the city's defense council, Oleksandr Vilkul, reported 8 injured as a result of the attack. As of the morning, 2 people remain in the hospital with moderate injuries.

Due to the shelling, more than 29 thousand electricity subscribers were urgently disconnected, complicating the situation in the city. Also, more than 30 heating plants were shut down, one of which continues to operate from a generator. Oleksandr Vilkul noted that the heating supply at this heating plant is just starting.

Situation in the city

Despite the difficult circumstances, electric transport in the Ingulets district has been restored, and schools and kindergartens in this district are transitioning to remote learning. Oleksandr Vilkul emphasized that hospitals are operating on generators, and all invincibility points have been instructed to turn on generators at the first need. The situation in the city, according to Vilkul, is stabilized, but there are still challenges related to energy supply.

This attack highlights the ongoing threat to Ukraine's infrastructure amid the war, as well as the importance of a rapid response by local authorities to emergencies. Restoring electricity supply and the operation of social institutions is critically important for maintaining the city's livability, especially during the winter period. The city of Kriviy Rih, like other regions, continues to face challenges related to energy security in the context of armed conflict.
