Crisis of trust in France: why every second French person dreams of emigration
France is experiencing the strongest institutional trust crisis in the last 20 years, reflected in a high level of pessimism among the population. As of 2025, the level of pessimism reached 27%, indicating growing dissatisfaction among citizens. One of the most significant signs of this crisis is the desire to emigrate, which stood at 11% in 2024. This indicates that many French people are seeking opportunities to improve their lives outside the country.
Trust in the government and state institutions has fallen by 13 points to 29%, which is historically low. President Emmanuel Macron's approval rating has also fallen to 28%, compared to 61% in the first year of his term. These figures demonstrate that the population is losing faith in the government's ability to effectively address the issues faced by the French daily.
Main reasons for the crisis
The main reasons for this crisis are related to the tax burden, economic situation, and political instability. 67% of French people believe that their personal financial situation is worsening, adding to the overall sense of hopelessness.
“I lost many clients. People can no longer afford to go out like before. Entrepreneurs are burdened by unbearable tax pressure.” - Julien
Many young people, despite high salaries, find it difficult to buy housing in Paris, leading them to consider the possibility of moving. One such young person shares: “Despite a high salary, I can't afford to buy housing in Paris and am considering moving to Canada.”
This situation indicates that France is at a crossroads. The presidential elections in France will take place in 2027, which could present an opportunity for changes in political direction and the restoration of public trust in state institutions. However, currently, almost every second French person who does not trust the institutions is planning emigration, which is a worrying signal for the country's future.
The deterioration of trust in state institutions and increasing pessimism among citizens may have serious consequences for the socio-economic stability of France. If the government does not take effective measures to improve the situation, it could lead to further increases in emigration, especially among the youth, which in turn will impact the demographic structure of the country. Ahead of the presidential elections in 2027, the issue of trust in authorities and economic stability will be key in political debates and candidates' platforms.
