Kyiv Mobilizes Thousands to Combat Icy Rain and Slick Roads

Київ залучає тисячі людей для боротьби з наслідками дощів та небезпечними дорожніми умовами.

Kyiv Deploys Major Resources to Tackle Icing After Freezing Rain

Freezing rain and wet snow in Kyiv on January 27 have created widespread icy conditions. In response, municipal services have launched a large-scale operation, deploying over 200 pieces of specialized equipment and nearly 4,000 workers to treat roads with anti-icing agents. Meteorologists warn that the hazardous weather, including further ice accumulation, will continue to complicate road conditions. This type of winter precipitation, which coats surfaces in a layer of ice, is particularly dangerous for drivers and pedestrians.

The situation worsened overnight as freezing rain turned to ice and was compounded by frost and wet snow in the morning. Priority is being given to treating:

  • Major highways,
  • Bridges,
  • Inclines and declines.

Crews are also working on bus stops, narrow sidewalks, staircases, safety islands, and pedestrian crossings. As of today, 410 workers in 61 brigades from Kyivavtodor are engaged in manual clearing.

Additionally, over 2,800 employees from utility management companies, supported by 20 pieces of equipment, are treating areas around residential buildings. In parks and squares, 622 workers and 30 units of machinery are operating. The weather forecast for January 27 in Kyiv predicts cloudy skies, light wet snow and rain, and ice glaze with temperatures around -4°C. Forecasters have issued a Level I (yellow) danger warning for several Ukrainian regions, including the capital.

Forecasts and Official Guidance

Ice is expected across central, most northern, and southern regions. According to meteorologists, icy roads are anticipated nationwide, except in the south. Should conditions deteriorate significantly, restrictions on oversized vehicle entry into the city may be imposed, further impacting traffic. Municipal services continue to work to ensure road safety and comfortable movement for the capital's residents.

The situation in Kyiv underscores the critical need for rapid response by utility services to adverse weather, as ice glaze can lead to numerous traffic accidents and severely hinder mobility for city residents.

Forecasts for the coming days suggest similar weather phenomena may recur, requiring services to remain on high alert to ensure road safety. The situation demands extra caution from both drivers and pedestrians due to the heightened risk of injury on icy surfaces.
