Лідяний дощ у Києві та області: основні ризики та поради щодо безпеки.

Icy rain in Kyiv and Kyiv region

On January 8, 2023, icy rain occurred in Kyiv and Kyiv region, leading to icing of wires and trees. This phenomenon caused several dangers, including falling trees and slippery roads. Icy rain occurs due to temperature inversion, when the air temperature near the ground remains frosty while higher air layers are warmer. As a result of this phenomenon, ice forms on surfaces, posing a threat to the safety of people and infrastructure.

Consequences and risks of icing

The icing that occurred as a result of the icy rain can lead to power line breaks, creating risks for electricity supply in the region. Additionally, tree branches can break under the weight of ice, increasing danger for pedestrians and drivers. In this regard, the Obukhiv City Council warned about the risks, stating that

"being under trees is extremely dangerous and poses a threat to the life and health of citizens".

The rain started after lunch on Thursday, January 8, and at that time Bohdan Balagura reported difficult icing conditions in Kyiv region. He also noted that utility services are already working in an enhanced mode to minimize the impact of the phenomenon. In the coming days, a sharp temperature drop is expected, which may exacerbate problems related to icing. The main risks of the phenomenon remain:

  • icing of wires
  • falling trees
  • extreme icing

Citizens are advised to be cautious and avoid being under trees during this period. This situation in Kyiv region emphasizes the importance of preparedness for winter weather conditions that can have serious consequences for citizens' safety. Utility services and local authorities must respond promptly to such emergencies to ensure the safety of the population and reduce risks associated with icing. It is important for residents to follow recommendations to avoid dangerous areas while the phenomenon continues.
