Facial Clues to Hidden Heart Risks
Yellowish deposits on the eyelids, known as xanthelasma, have emerged as a significant indicator of underlying cardiovascular disease. A recent study published in the journal Atherosclerosis analyzed data from nearly 18,000 patients diagnosed with xanthelasma and revealed a strong connection between these visible skin lesions and an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, and transient ischemic attacks (TIAs).
Elevated Threats and Long-Term Impact
Within the first year of follow-up, 1% of individuals with xanthelasma experienced a heart attack, compared to only 0.35% in the control group. Stroke incidence was 0.95% among those with xanthelasma, versus 0.3% in those without. TIAs, often referred to as mini-strokes, occurred in 0.6% of xanthelasma patients compared to 0.19% in the control group. The relative risk of major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) was several times higher in patients with xanthelasma, a risk that persisted for up to 10 years regardless of blood cholesterol levels.
Xanthelasma forms due to cholesterol and lipid accumulation within immune cells called macrophages and should be viewed as a clinical warning sign rather than a direct cause of cardiovascular events. Many people seek dermatological treatment for xanthelasma because of its cosmetic effects, often unaware of the serious heart-related risks it may signal. The researchers emphasize the importance of primary care physicians recognizing xanthelasma as a prompt to conduct thorough cardiovascular risk assessments.
