Comments from the President of Cuba on Trump's Calls
The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, commented on the calls from U.S. President Donald Trump to reach a deal with Washington, stating the unacceptability of external pressure and emphasizing Cuba's independence. The Cuban leader's response came against the backdrop of Trump’s announcement of a complete suspension of oil supplies and financial aid from Venezuela to Cuba. Díaz-Canel emphasized that
“Cuba is an independent and sovereign country. No one will dictate to us what to do”.
Trump noted that since Nicolás Maduro's takeover, no tanker has departed from Venezuelan ports towards Cuba. The U.S. President also mentioned preparations for an oil deal with the interim government of Delcy Rodríguez amounting to $2 billion, which he believes could impact Cuba's economic situation. Meanwhile, Díaz-Canel stressed:
“Those who turn everything into business, even human lives, have no moral right to tell Cuba anything, absolutely nothing”.
Relations between Cuba and the USA
The Cuban president also noted that those who 'hysterically attack our country' do so out of outrage over the sovereign decision of the Cuban people to choose their political model. Amid increasing pressure from the U.S., Cuba continues to defend its independence and sovereignty.
This situation reflects the longstanding disputes between Cuba and the U.S. that have lasted for decades and is an important part of global politics. Cuba's refusal to comply with Washington's demands could lead to further deterioration of relations between the countries, as well as intensify Cuba's economic isolation in the face of already existing difficulties. Díaz-Canel's position indicates Cuba's intention to maintain its autonomy and political course despite external pressure.
