Call for Preparedness Amid Rising Threats
Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has called on citizens to mentally prepare for potential destruction in Kyiv and, if possible, temporarily evacuate the capital. This appeal comes as Russia issues new threats of systematic strikes against Ukraine’s capital. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has voiced concern, stating that the overall level of security threats remains unchanged and that the Kremlin’s latest warnings amount to shameless blackmail. For context, Kyiv has faced repeated attacks since the start of the full-scale war in February 2022, and the current escalation underscores ongoing risks for residents.
Kuleba emphasized that Kyiv residents must stay vigilant and follow safety protocols.
“We need to mentally prepare for destruction. We saw the devastation that occurred on the night of the 24th to the 25th: residential buildings, museums, enterprises. This is psychologically hard, and we must be ready for that image,” Kuleba stated.
Security Situation in Kyiv
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, during a conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, threatened to launch systematic strikes on targets in Kyiv. In response, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry said the Kremlin is using intimidation tactics to pressure the United States and international partners. Russia has been using missiles and drones against Ukraine’s capital for over four years, with attacks occurring nearly every week.
“For over four years and three months, Russia has been using the full range of deadly missiles and drones against Ukraine’s capital,” emphasized Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
Amid the threats, ambassadors from European Union countries have refused to leave Kyiv, stating they will continue working as usual. Ukraine has also expressed readiness to enhance security measures for foreign diplomatic missions. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry views the new Russian threats as shameless blackmail, noting that Moscow is effectively admitting its attacks aim to intimidate the foreign diplomatic corps.
As a result, the situation in Ukraine remains tense, and Ukrainian citizens, especially those in Kyiv, must factor these threats into their near-term plans. This call for preparedness and caution reflects the broader context of the ongoing conflict and the growing danger of military actions on Ukrainian soil, requiring heightened attention to safety from both the state and the population.
As the situation in Kyiv remains precarious, it's crucial to stay informed about the ongoing developments. Recent statements from Russian officials have sparked discussions about the potential for increased aggression, prompting some to question the credibility of these threats.
