Former Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski Speaks Out
Aleksander Kwasniewski, Poland’s ex-president, shared his perspective on Russia’s approach under President Vladimir Putin toward neighboring countries and Western leaders. He emphasized the critical need for Western solidarity and continued support for Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia. Reflecting on a past conversation with Putin, Kwasniewski revealed that the Russian leader showed little understanding of the significance of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania in Russia’s regional relations. According to Kwasniewski, Putin wields more unchecked power today than Stalin did, as he operates without a strong parliament or advisors capable of challenging his decisions.
Example of Russian Hostility
Kwasniewski cited a recent example of Russian aggression: in September 2023, a Russian Mi-8 helicopter from the Kaliningrad region intruded 300 meters into Polish airspace, remaining there for 42 seconds. Polish military officials described this incident as a deliberate test of their air defense readiness.
“Russia—not only Putin—respects strength and dismisses weakness. I once told Putin: you speak of Russian sensitivity, but why do you disregard the feelings of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania? He looked at me as if I were from another planet. 'What Lithuanian or Polish sensitivity? Only Russian sentiment matters. Moscow does not believe in tears.'” Aleksander Kwasniewski
Kwasniewski further stressed the importance of a united West, the strength of NATO, and maintaining sanctions against Russia. He underscored the necessity of enabling Ukraine to defend itself effectively during this war. These remarks were made during the program “In Trend” on DW channel and were published on the “Khvylia” website.
His comments highlight the urgent need for cohesive cooperation among Western nations in response to the threat posed by Russia. Kwasniewski’s insights into Putin’s disregard for neighboring countries’ interests reveal deep-rooted issues within Russian foreign policy. Such statements may encourage intensified international efforts to back Ukraine and strengthen Europe’s defensive capabilities amid ongoing aggression.
As Kwasniewski highlights the significance of Western unity in supporting Ukraine, it's essential to consider the underlying fears driving Putin's actions. His obsession with a democratic Ukraine could prolong the ongoing conflict for years, as discussed in a related analysis.
