Laminating documents in Ukraine: which papers will become invalid after lamination

Specialists of the Kyiv Interregional Department of the Ministry of Justice have clarified the risks associated with laminating official documents in Ukraine. Despite the fact that there is no direct legislative ban on lamination in the country, state authorities work exclusively with original documents. This can lead to complications for citizens who decided to protect their papers in this way.

Lamination complicates the examination of paper, watermarks, and other security elements, which are important for confirming the authenticity of documents. In particular, the Migration Service or border guards may refuse to allow laminated documents across the border, creating additional difficulties for travelers. It is also important to note that it is impossible to place an apostille stamp on a laminated surface, which complicates the legalization of documents abroad.

Documents for which lamination is allowed

Among the documents for which lamination is allowed are:

  • passport (ID card)
  • driver's license
  • pension certificate
  • educational diplomas

However, even these documents may not always be accepted without issues, as state authorities strongly recommend working only with originals. Therefore, citizens should take into account the risks associated with lamination to avoid trouble in the future.

In light of the above, citizens should be careful when making the decision to laminate documents, as this may lead to legal complications. Given that lamination is not a recommended practice for important official papers, especially those that may be needed abroad, it is important to keep the originals in proper condition and follow the recommendations of state authorities.
