Latvia’s Next-Generation Defense Systems
Latvia’s armed forces have concluded testing of advanced defense systems and are now deploying them along the border with Russia and Belarus to intercept airborne threats. Major Modris Kairišs, head of Latvia’s Autonomous Systems Competence Center, confirmed the development. In the near future, interceptor drones and fully autonomous firing positions will be stationed on Latvia’s eastern frontier.
“Soon, very soon—hopefully within a couple of days—we will officially deploy interceptor units,” said Major Modris Kairišs.
New Military Defense Technologies
As part of these new defense measures, Riga has completed work on a remotely operated turret system equipped with 50 mm automatic cannons. To improve the detection of aerial targets, a multi-layered network has been established, capable of identifying objects at low altitudes between 50 and 100 meters. This system includes:
- next-generation tactical radars,
- acoustic sensors to detect engine sounds,
- optical camera systems for visual target verification.
Beyond military actions, Latvia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has lodged a protest with Russia’s chargé d’affaires and handed over a diplomatic note in response to a Kremlin disinformation campaign. The trigger was statements made by Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service on May 26, 2026. The Russian intelligence agency spread claims about the alleged deployment of Ukrainian Armed Forces’ unmanned systems personnel at five Latvian military bases, including Ādaži and Lielvārde.
Latvia’s Foreign Minister Baiba Braže and President Edgars Rinkēvičs have stressed that Latvia has not provided—and has no intention of providing—its airspace or territory for attacks.
“One of NATO’s biggest challenges is the outdated approach to command and control systems,” added Major Modris Kairišs.
With the rollout of these new defense systems, Latvia is stepping up its security measures amid rising regional tensions. The actions of Latvian authorities reflect a drive to strengthen defensive capabilities in the face of potential threats from neighboring states. At the same time, the diplomatic protest against Russia underscores strained bilateral relations, which could affect regional stability and security in the future.
In light of these heightened tensions, Latvia has taken further diplomatic steps by formally addressing Russia regarding misinformation about the alleged presence of Ukrainian forces on its territory. This protest is part of a broader strategy to ensure national security and uphold Latvia’s integrity within the region.
