Coordinated Effort to Secure Latvia's Eastern Border
Latvia has launched a new security operation along its eastern frontier, acting on a threat assessment prepared by the country's defense and interior ministries. The initiative, ordered by Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs, is meant to bolster security throughout the border area. The operation is being coordinated by the Crisis Management Center of the State Chancellery, with the following agencies taking part:
- The State Border Guard,
- The State Police,
- The National Armed Forces of Latvia.
The Ministry of Defense plans to increase the number of National Armed Forces personnel deployed for the operation and to improve logistics support. Surveillance capabilities will also be expanded, with greater use of drones, helicopters, and fixed-wing aircraft to monitor the situation and maintain security.
In addition, the State Border Guard, the State Police, the Military Intelligence and Security Service, the State Security Service, and the National Armed Forces will exchange information on attempted illegal border crossings. Latvia's Foreign Ministry will work with neighboring countries—Lithuania, Estonia, and Poland—to ensure coordinated action on this issue. The Ministry of Justice will meanwhile examine whether existing penalties under the Criminal Law are sufficient for those who organize illegal border crossings.

The Cabinet of Ministers is set to weigh the creation of a dedicated working group to address hybrid threats. The urgency behind the operation became clearer in the night leading into Tuesday, when border guards from the Silene post discovered a tunnel dug by migrants near the Latvia-Belarus border—the first such finding on that route.
