Latvia Delivers Protest Note to Russia Over Disinformation About Ukrainian Armed Forces

Латвія висловила свою незгоду з дезінформацією щодо Збройних сил України, направивши офіційне повідомлення Росії.

Latvia Formally Protests Russian Actions

Latvia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a formal protest to Russia's chargé d'affaires, delivering an official diplomatic note in response to a Kremlin-led disinformation campaign. The trigger was a public statement from Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service on May 19, 2026, which falsely claimed that military personnel from Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces were stationed at five Latvian bases, including Ādaži and Lielvārde.

Moscow Issues Threats

During a United Nations Security Council session, Russian representatives threatened Latvia with 'fair retribution and strikes.' In response, Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže and President Edgars Rinkēvičs reaffirmed that Latvia has not and will not allow its airspace to be used for attacks on targets inside Russia. In a conversation with the head of Russia's embassy, Latvian officials emphasized that despite numerous warnings delivered both through diplomatic channels and publicly, Moscow continues to spread falsehoods.

An official note of protest from Latvia's Foreign Ministry was also handed over to the head of the Russian embassy. At this tense juncture, Latvia remains steadfast in its commitment to territorial integrity and the inviolability of its airspace, signaling its readiness to defend its interests on the international stage.

This development highlights the growing friction between Latvia and Russia amid disinformation campaigns and threats from Moscow. As a NATO member, Latvia continues to demonstrate resolve in protecting its national security and interests, a stance that could have significant implications for stability in the Baltic region. With rising military activity and political provocations, the international community will be closely monitoring how the situation unfolds.

The recent tensions in the Baltic region are not isolated incidents, as evidenced by a similar situation involving Ukraine. Kyiv has also publicly countered Russian disinformation regarding alleged attacks originating from Latvian territory. This highlights a broader pattern of misinformation tactics employed by Moscow against its neighbors, raising concerns about regional stability.
