Political crisis in Latvia

Latvia is facing a political crisis after the liberal party "The Progressives" announced it could no longer cooperate within Prime Minister Evika Siliņa's cabinet. Andris Šuvajevs, leader of The Progressives, has called on Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs to begin consultations on forming a new government. The coalition's breakup was triggered by the resignation of Defense Minister Andris Sprūds, which followed incidents involving Ukrainian drones.

Defense minister resigns

Andris Sprūds, a member of The Progressives, stepped down after two Ukrainian drones struck oil storage tanks on Latvian territory. Prime Minister Siliņa had urged Sprūds to resign due to a delayed deployment of counter-drone systems. Colonel Raivis Melnis of the Latvian army has been appointed as the new defense minister.

The Progressives are now demanding the prime minister's resignation or a no-confidence vote in the Saeima. If Siliņa remains in office, the party will withdraw its two ministers from the government. In a statement, Šuvajevs said:

"Last week's actions show that the prime minister is working for her own interests—whether for ratings or election preparation... The government is unable to function, and that can no longer be changed. So now there are two options: either Siliņa simply resigns due to a loss of political trust, or the Saeima puts an end to it with a vote."

The government's future now depends on President Rinkēvičs' decision. Latvia's Foreign Ministry also summoned Russia's chargé d'affaires and issued a protest note after the drone incidents. Notably, on May 7, Latvia reported that Russian drones had violated its airspace, with two crashing on its territory. Those drones were not shot down due to risks to civilians and civilian infrastructure.

This political crisis in Latvia could seriously destabilize the government and affect the country's foreign policy, particularly regarding security amid heightened tensions with Russia. The defense minister's resignation and The Progressives' demands may lead to early elections or a new coalition, reshaping the domestic political landscape. It remains to be seen whether President Rinkēvičs can broker a compromise to stabilize the situation.

The recent drone incidents have not only led to political upheaval in Latvia but also raised significant security concerns. In a related story, two drones targeted an oil depot in Latvia, prompting an emergency security meeting to address the escalating situation.
