Tragedy Strikes in Val Veny
A deadly avalanche in Italy's Val Veny on Sunday, October 15, killed three French skiers from Chamonix, aged 29, 31, and 35. The group was skiing off-piste near Courmayeur when the snowslide hit. All three were equipped with avalanche transceivers, which helped rescuers locate them under approximately 1.5 meters of snow. The first victim died shortly after being rescued, the second succumbed before reaching a hospital, and the third passed away on Monday morning. In a separate incident the same day, another avalanche occurred in the Valchiavenna valley, near the Swiss border, burying a group of four people on snowmobiles. While three individuals were quickly freed, search efforts for the fourth person are ongoing. Mountain rescue teams and helicopters are involved in both operations.
