More Than a Third of PTSD Patients Become Nightmare-Free on THC-Based Medication

Sleep Disrupted by Traumatic Memories

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can turn sleep into a battlefield, with nightmares replaying traumatic events. A new study from Charité — Universitätsmedizin Berlin shows that dronabinol, a prescription medication based on THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), significantly cuts the frequency and intensity of these nighttime episodes. Published in Nature Medicine, the findings reveal that more than a third of patients became entirely nightmare-free, and over half experienced meaningful improvement.

Inside the Clinical Trial

The research was a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial lasting ten weeks. More than 170 participants received either dronabinol drops or a placebo every evening before bed. Nightmare intensity was measured on a scale from 0 to 8. In the dronabinol group, the average score dropped by 3.7 points, compared to a 2.2-point reduction in the placebo group. Among those taking dronabinol, over one-third said their nightmares vanished completely, and 21% saw their nightmare frequency fall by at least half.

In addition, around 83% of patients reported an overall improvement in their well-being. Notably, no severe side effects or withdrawal symptoms emerged during the study. Lead researcher Professor Stefan Röpke noted:

These results open new therapeutic avenues for PTSD patients plagued by chronic nightmares, offering a foundation for further scientific investigation. Because PTSD frequently disrupts daily functioning, effective treatments such as dronabinol could substantially enhance patients' quality of life. The next phases of research will explore the drug's long-term effects and its suitability for widespread clinical use.
