Evaluating Travel Destinations Through the Lens of Happiness

A recent study assessed 47 popular tourist cities against five essential elements that contribute to travelers’ happiness: sunlight exposure, sleep quality, availability of healthy dining options, access to nature, and walkability. Lisbon, Portugal, emerged as the top-ranking destination, boasting numerous benefits for visitors. Notably, nearly 10% of Lisbon’s restaurants are classified as healthy—surpassing cities like Paris, Tokyo, and New York in this regard. The city also offers an impressive 49 square meters of green space per resident, almost four times more than Madrid. On average, Lisbon receives 2,828 hours of sunshine annually, and tourists can easily access nearby beaches such as Costa da Caparica and Cascais.

Top-Ranked Cities and Other Noteworthy Destinations

The top five happiest cities also include:

  • Helsinki, Finland
  • Orlando, USA
  • Athens, Greece
  • Edinburgh, Scotland

Helsinki has held its status as the world's happiest capital for eight consecutive years. Orlando ranks third, distinguished by its extensive green spaces per capita and nearly 2,930 hours of annual sunshine. Athens stands out as the most pedestrian-friendly city in the ranking, while Edinburgh is the sole UK city in the top 10, recognized for its parks, sleep quality, and walkability.

The second group of happiest cities features:

  • Madrid, Spain
  • Vienna, Austria
  • Budapest, Hungary
  • Oslo, Norway
  • Vilnius, Lithuania

For travelers opting for budget-friendly bus travel across Europe, it is advised to choose aisle seats near the front to enhance safety. As Natalie Dattilo-Ryan explains,

“The new Holiday Happiness Index is built around the concept of happiness.”
This highlights the importance of considering various factors that contribute to comfort and satisfaction during trips.

This research underscores how elements like healthy food options, abundant green spaces, and ample sunshine significantly enhance tourists’ enjoyment. Lisbon’s leading position demonstrates how focusing on these wellness factors can improve a city’s appeal to visitors. Such insights offer valuable guidance for destinations aiming to elevate their tourism experience and attract more travelers.
