Tourism Updates

In 2026, Lisbon earned the prestigious titles of Europe’s Leading City Destination and Best Cruise Destination, surpassing renowned cities such as Rome, Barcelona, London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Venice, Vienna, Geneva, Dubrovnik, Lyon, and Porto. The winners were revealed on October 17 during the World Travel Awards ceremony held in Montenegro.

Lisbon’s recognition as a premier cruise port highlights its rapidly growing appeal among cruise travelers, outshining competitors like Athens, Copenhagen, Dubrovnik, and Venice. Additionally, Portugal was honored as Europe’s top tourist destination, ahead of Spain, Greece, and Turkey. The city of Porto also received acclaim in the cultural category, underscoring its significant role in European tourism.

Global Highlights

On the international stage, National Geographic named Norway’s Westland region, with Bergen as its hub, the best travel destination for 2027. Their list features 25 global hotspots, including Catalina Island in California, which won the Readers’ Choice award. Visitors to Westland are encouraged to explore:

  • the Hardangerfjord,
  • Folgefonna National Park,
  • the famous Troll’s Tongue rock formation,
  • the Nærøyfjord,
  • and Bergen’s medieval Bryggen district.

These accolades highlight the increasing importance of Lisbon and Portugal on the world tourism map. Meanwhile, other regions are making headlines: in Egypt, tourists can witness a rare natural event at the Temple of Ramesses II that has recurred for over 3,000 years. Germany’s Deutsche Bahn is set to resume its direct Berlin-Paris train service after a six-month pause, potentially boosting travel between these capitals. Peru is also updating its visitor regulations for Machu Picchu, a crucial detail for travelers planning to visit the iconic site.

Such achievements reflect the rising popularity of Lisbon and Portugal as key tourist hubs, likely encouraging further improvements in local infrastructure and services. At the same time, destinations worldwide are competing by promoting their unique cultural and natural attractions, intensifying competition in Europe’s and the global tourism markets.

As Lisbon continues to shine on the European tourism stage, it's also noteworthy that the city has been recognized for its overall visitor satisfaction.
