Dietary Strategies to Combat Aging

Scientists have discovered that it is possible to rejuvenate older adults in just four weeks by adjusting their diet. Research conducted at the University of Sydney found that individuals aged 65 to 75 can reduce their biological age—a measure of health and bodily function distinct from chronological age—through specific nutritional changes. The key lies in limiting saturated fats and animal-based proteins. These findings were published in the scientific journal Aging Cell.

Study Design and Key Findings

The study was led by Dr. Caitlin Andrews and Associate Professor Alistair Senior, involving 104 participants divided into four diet groups. Each group followed a unique eating plan for four weeks, with all diets providing 14% of calories from protein.

  • Half of the participants consumed an omnivorous diet with an equal balance of animal and plant proteins,
  • while the other half followed a semi-vegetarian diet, with 70% of protein derived from plant sources.

Additionally, diets varied between high-fat, low-carbohydrate and high-carbohydrate, low-fat options. Researchers monitored 20 vital biomarkers—including cholesterol, insulin, and C-reactive protein levels—to assess physiological responses.

The most notable improvements occurred in groups consuming diets rich in carbohydrates and containing 28-29% fat. This suggests that such nutritional profiles may effectively slow biological aging processes.
